Brazed plate heat exchangers

The plates are permanently joined into a compact pack. It cannot be opened like a gasketed frame; service and replacement decisions depend on the fluid, fouling and joining material.

Plate heat exchanger overview

Brazed heat exchanger components

A brazed exchanger is a permanently joined assembly. The list describes its internal construction; it does not imply that the internal plates can be removed and replaced during routine service.

  1. Channel plates

Corrugated sheets form the heat-transfer pack and the passages for the two fluids.

  2. Cover-plate assemblies

The outer assemblies close and reinforce the pack; their construction depends on the design pressure and model.

  3. Sealing plates

Some designs have sealing plates between the outer cover assemblies and the first or last channel plate. Their arrangement depends on the construction.

  4. Blind rings, where provided

Some designs use separate or integrated blind rings. These are metal construction elements, distinct from replaceable elastomer gaskets.

  5. Connections

Nozzles or other specified connections attach the unit to the circuits. Their diameter, orientation and joint type belong to the exact execution.

Plate and brazing materials

The joining material is part of the wetted construction. Confirm its exact alloy as well as the plates: a stainless-steel plate designation does not describe every surface in contact with the fluid. Compatibility must be checked for the actual fluid composition, temperature and cleaning process.

Applications and selection conditions

Separate the application from the model designation: the same external size does not confirm identical plate count, connections or operating limits for different duties.

Heating and domestic hot water

Specify both temperature programmes and the water conditions. Confirm the compatibility of the plate material and brazing alloy and the cleaning requirements for the chosen execution.

Liquid cooling

For water or glycol loops, include fluid composition, concentration, temperatures and allowable pressure losses on both sides.

Evaporators and condensers

State the refrigerant and phase-change conditions. The manufacturer confirms the refrigerant execution and its limits.

Cleaning the brazed pack

The internal heat-transfer surfaces are not accessible by opening the pack. Check the deposits, fluids, plate material and brazing alloy before choosing a cleaning method. Follow the procedure approved for the specific unit; a method for a gasketed exchanger does not automatically apply.

Complete-unit replacement and accessories

Individual internal plates and brazed joints are not removable service parts. When replacing a complete unit, compare the full execution code, plate count, fluids and duty, pressure and temperature limits, connections and installed depth.

Insulation or mounting accessories may be separate items if offered for the execution. Identify these accessories separately from the heat exchanger itself.

Equipment specifications are compared after the duty, materials, connections and service requirements have been defined.
