Spiral plate heat exchangers

Two metal sheets are wound to form two separate spiral channels. Spiral heat exchangers belong to the broader plate heat exchanger family; their channel geometry differs from a conventional corrugated plate pack.

Spiral heat exchanger components

Spiral sheets form the heat-transfer core. The enclosure, covers and sealing arrangement depend on the liquid-liquid, condensing or other execution. Channel width is a design dimension, not a separate spare part.

  1. Spiral heat-transfer core

Wound metal sheets separate the fluids along the heat-transfer surface.

  2. Enclosure and supports

Retain and support the assembly in the specified installation orientation.

  3. Covers, where provided

Removable covers provide the access allowed by the particular channel-end design.

  4. Cover seals and fasteners

Their type and replacement procedure are specific to the cover and pressure design.

  5. Fluid connections

The connection arrangement follows the specified flow scheme and duty.

Flow arrangements

Counter-current and cross-flow arrangements both exist. A liquid-to-liquid duty and a condensing duty can require different paths and orientation. The symbolic spiral picture does not define the nozzle positions or flow configuration of a supplied unit.

Fouling and cleaning

Describe particle size, solids content, fibres, viscosity and the expected deposits. Single-channel geometry can help some fouling duties, but “self-cleaning” is not a universal guarantee. Confirm cover access and the approved cleaning procedure for the actual design.

Covers, seals and service access

Identify the actual cover arrangement and which channels are accessible before selecting cleaning or replacement parts. Use the equipment drawing for cover seals, fasteners, any spacers and internal details; these are not universal across spiral designs.

Equipment specifications are compared after the duty, materials, connections and service requirements have been defined.
